Playwrights Union FIRST PEEK Reading Series, May 17-18, 2014


The Playwrights Union invites you to our 5th annual reading series, featuring the brand new work of some of our member playwrights. All plays were drafted during our February Writing Challenge, and revised in the weeks leading up to this event. Come participate in the process of play creation and join our reception on Saturday night!

Saturday, May 17th

Burners/From our Ashes by Terence Anthony
In a dystopian future, high-tech drones and bio-engineered soldiers fight to quash a resistance movement rising up from the impoverished masses. As war rages, a woman named Liv seeks out a mysterious smuggler to help her return home.

Building The Perfect Chair by Lisa Kenner Grissom
Creative and romantic partners Connie and Theo hope to start a design revolution by following in the footsteps of their artistic muses, Charles and Ray Eames. But when romantic entanglements and artistic differences get in the way, they must confront what it means to build a perfect chair—or relationship.

Tara Obernier by Carrie Barrett
Tara Obernier is a just a regular gal. Until the internet decides she isn’t. A dark comedy about comeuppance.

When We Could by Cory Hinkle
Against a backdrop of right wing Tea Party politics, a grieving couple tries to find a way to move on from the loss of their son, but in order to do so, their beliefs and worldview are tested. A play about a devastating personal loss, as well as a nostalgia for an America that never existed.

Sunday, May 18th

Gone by Lolly Ward
A living will provides peace of mind as four stepsiblings divide their anticipated inheritance with generosity…with suspicion…with greed. Gamble the night away, but whatever you do, don’t leave the house—your family is watching.

After and Before by Eric Loo
After a lifetime of service, Don decides to leave the priesthood when the metaphysical no longer means anything to him. In this play of desire and faith, we travel all the way back to his first sermon to find out how he got there.

Sisters Three by Jami Brandli
The Bronte sisters, modern day. Due to their brother’s death, Charlotte has dropped out of society to join a commune on Gondal Island. So Emily and Anne build a canoe to rescue her. In this off-center dramedy about family, social media, and fame, individual secrets and desires are revealed which could tear the sisters apart.

Currency by Jennie Webb
A love story set in a time of overextended trust and inflated intimacy. After sharing a night of unexpected romance, a 40-something couple is hit with even more surprises and left searching for value in a world that’s changing way too fast.

Street parking at Monk Space:

The immediate block of Monk Space is metered parking with one hour limit up until 6:00 pm. After 6:00 pm no restrictions. Free on Sunday. One block to the West and East is unmetered street parking. No permits are required. Be aware that Manhattan Place between 2nd and 3rd Streets has limited 2 hour parking during business hours.
